About Inagua
Inagua is the southernmost island group in The Bahamas, comprising Great Inagua and Little Inagua. Matthew Town is the main settlement. Birdwatching, protected wetlands and a long history of salt production shape the islands’ identity.
What to Do
Beaches
Iron Badge Beach near town and shores around Northwest Point, Devil’s Point and Coconut Grove offer places to discover the coastline. Ask locally about access to more secluded areas.
Wildlife Tours
Arrange visits to protected habitats through the park office or an experienced local guide. Tours can introduce flamingos, other birds and the island’s varied landscapes.
Bird Watching & Flamingos
Great Inagua’s wetlands support a major West Indian flamingo colony alongside many other resident and migratory birds. Look for parrots, ducks and wetland species with local guidance.
Union Creek National Reserve
Mangroves and a sheltered tidal creek provide habitat for marine life, including sea turtles. The reserve is associated with turtle research and conservation.
Historic Matthew Town
The Old Colonial Jail and the Salt House reflect the settlement’s history. Salt ponds and the wider salt-making landscape remain an important part of Great Inagua’s story.
Great Inagua Lighthouse
The white lighthouse near Matthew Town is a prominent island landmark. Ask locally about access and viewing arrangements.
